FMCSA has once again extended its waiver allowing motor carriers and drivers to rely on a paper copy of the medical examiner's certificate (MEC) as proof of the driver's medial certification for up to 60 days after the MEC was issued. FMCSA strongly recommends that, in addition to submitting physical qualification examination results electronically, all medical examiners continue to issue paper Medical Examiner’s Certificates, Form MCSA-5876, to drivers at the time of their examination until further notice.

DATES: This waiver is effective April 11, 2026, and expires on October 11, 2026

This extension is intended to allow State Driver’s Licensing Agencies (SDLAs) and certified medical examiners to transition to the secure electronic transmission of medical certification data required under the National Registry II (NRII) final rule, now only 5 states have not transitioned. They are:

Alaska

California

Kentucky

Louisiana

New Hampshire
