Calls for FMCSA to End ELD Self-Certification Amplified

With the recent crackdown on non-compliant ELDs, it has come to the attention of inspectors that most ELDs share underlying software and hardware, making it difficult for them to continue auditing to a model-by-model approach and simply taking individual ELD models off the self-certification registry.

Taking individual ELD models off the self-certification registry leads to companies rebranding the ELD and re-self-certifying it under a new name. Non-Compliant ELDs create an opportunity to manipulate the device and bypass HOS regulations, which causes fatigued driving, fatal accidents and safety issues.

Instead, more and more industry safety experts are asking for the FMCSA to discontinue the self-certification process and instead require independent third-party testing and the ability to revoke "families" of noncompliant ELDs thereby closing the loophole of rebranding individual ELD models and improving safety on the roadways.
