CVSA’s Brake Safety Week takes place next week.  If you haven't prepared yet, now's the time! This annual initiative involves law enforcement personnel across the United States, Canada, and Mexico conducting inspections of commercial motor vehicles to ensure brake systems are functioning properly.

For 2025, the emphasis is on brake drums and rotors. Inspectors will pay particular attention to these components, as issues such as cracks or wear can significantly affect a vehicle's braking efficiency and pose safety risks if parts become dislodged during transit.

Vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service violations will be removed from roadways until the issues are corrected. Some jurisdictions may also employ performance-based brake testers (PBBT) to assess braking performance.

In addition to inspections, Brake Safety Week serves as an educational opportunity. CVSA provides resources to help drivers, motor carriers, and mechanics prepare, emphasizing the importance of regular brake maintenance and inspections to prevent accidents and ensure road safety.

Last year 16,725 inspections were conducted on CMVs, out of those inspections 2,149 resulted in brake-related out-of-service violations.
